Gridwatch

Data coverage & confidence

Know what the map knows.

Coverage describes where Gridwatch is listening. Confidence describes what a reported point, customer count, and timestamp actually mean.

Geographic coverage

State reporting footprint

State-specific customer percentages are intentionally withheld until multi-state utility customer counts can be allocated reliably.

Spatial confidence

Location precision now

These percentages describe current active outage reports. A centroid can represent a county aggregate or a utility service-area polygon—not an exact incident address.

Impact confidence

Active report count quality

This distribution covers currently active outage reports—not historical events. “Single reported value” means the source supplied one number; Gridwatch has not independently verified it. Masked, ranged, estimated, and bounded values should not be read as exact household counts.

How to read Gridwatch

Coverage is not the same as completeness.

Utility coverage is based on the maintained research catalog. Customer coverage is an estimate based on catalog customer counts and can change as utilities are added.

Freshness records when a utility's reporting source was last collected. An unchanged outage can still be fresh when the utility successfully reports the same event again.

Known gaps include unavailable utilities, source outages, newly added utilities without history, and geographies where utilities publish aggregates rather than incidents.
